Exploring Tawang
The Tawang tour offers more than just Tawang. It is a complete experience of mind, body and soul. This tour offers an experience of monastic culture and natural splendour of the Eastern Himalayas, along with some an insight in to the lives of the people that live in this part of the world.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Guwahati to Nameri
- Arrive by morning flight to Guwahati.
- Pick up from airport and drive to Nameri National Park, located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and home to a wide range of exotic flora and fauna.
- Overnight stay at Nameri.
Day 2: Nameri to Dirang
- Post breakfast, cross the border into Arunachal Pradesh and enjoy the scenic drive to the small town of Dirang, ascending into the Kameng Valley.
- Enroute, visit the Tipi Orchid Centre that has an amazing variety of orchid species.
- Overnight stay at Dirang.
Day 3: Dirang
- Post a leisurely breakfast, head out to explore the stunning Dirang valley.
- Visit Dirang Dzong, a fortress built in the 15th century, take a dip in the hot water springs said to have medicinal properties, visit apple orchards at Dirang or go for a light hike around the valley to meet the locals and see the wildlife around.
- Return to the hotel for overnight stay at Dirang.
Day 4: Dirang to Tawang
- Post breakfast, set out on enchanting 8 hours’ drive to Tawang. Drive through the snow-capped Sela Pass, one of the highest motorable passes in the world .
- Arrive at Tawang by evening.
- Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 5: Tawang
- Post breakfast, visit to the 350 years old Tawang monastery, the second largest monastery in Asia.
- Visit the Ane Gompa (a nunnery) and Urgeyling monastery, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
- Before the day ends, walk to a Monpa (a tribe of Tibetan origin) village.
- Overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 6: Tawang sightseeing
Option 1
- Morning drive for approximately 3 hours to reach the picturesque valley of Zeminthang, to visit a Monpa settlement.
- Return to Tawang in the evening and spend the night at the hotel.
Option 2
- Early morning excursions to P.T Tso lake and Sangetsar lake, admiring these high altitude lakes.
- Travellers who wish to go to Bum La (only for Indians) can explore the high pass on the Indo – China border, provided they have got the necessary permits one day prior to their visit.
- Overnight stay at Tawang.
Day 7: Tawang to Bomdila
- Morning drive towards Bomdila, an approximately 8 hours’ drive from Tawang.
- In the evening, check in at the hotel and spend rest of the evening in leisure.
Day 8: Bomdila to Tezpur
- Post breakfast, journey towards Tezpur, approximately 8 hours.
- At Tezpur, indulge in local sightseeing. Witness the mighty Brahmaputra river running by the town. Also enjoy the sights of the city’s ancient structures and temples.
- Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 9: Tezpur to Guwahati
- After breakfast, journey back to Guwahati, approximately taking 5 hours.
- Take a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra or go for last minute shopping in the local market.
- Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 10: Departure: Guwahati
Drop at the Guwahati airport or railway station. End of tour.
